The Roads in Health

The Roads in Health, an open-access journal, is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes high-quality articles, original and theoretical research results, and critical review papers, providing insight into cutting-edge research in public health, health policy, and interdisciplinary approaches to health systems. The journal aims to provide a platform for studies that address the complexity of health beyond the clinic, emphasizing prevention, health promotion, and equity in health care. The scope includes (but is not limited to): Public health, epidemiology, and community health; global health and sustainable health systems; health education, promotion, and communication; health policy, management, and economics; interdisciplinary studies linking health with sociology, psychology, and environmental sciences. By encouraging evidence-based and cross-disciplinary research, The Roads in Health seeks to highlight emerging health challenges and innovative strategies that improve population health and reduce health inequalities worldwide. Submitted papers with new and significant results, confirmed by updated and reliable methods, will be considered for publication. Documents that are related to health are accepted in both animal and clinical experimentation. The journal also welcomes preliminary, explanatory, and compact small-scale results if they show the power to encourage and/or add to hypotheses or future health research. The journal does not accept case reports and studies using immortalized cell lines.

The meaning of Open Access for the journal 

Before the emergence of open-access journals, it was impossible to access research results without paying, even though most were supported by governmental sources collected through taxes. This significantly limited access to valuable information from humankind and allowed only a few people to benefit. Based on this idea, this journal creates an environment where everyone can access updated research results without borders or discrimination. The results published in this journal are valuable since all the submitted studies have been evaluated transparently and prioritized for high quality.

The authors of the articles published in The Roads hold the copyright to their articles, except for third-party images and other materials added by the publisher, which remain under the copyright of their respective owners.  The use of any parts of the material published in the journal by third parties is subject to copyright law and requires prior permission from the publisher; such materials may not be reused in any other publication without authorization.

 Transparency and Quality

Each article in The Roads journals can be published through the transparent evaluation of high-quality results of authors using well-known reviewers and editors. Such a rigorous and transparent evaluation process aims to reveal products that will significantly affect and help shape our scientific and social future, in other words, shape it. This approach ensures that certified new knowledge contributes to existing knowledge. To achieve this, the Roads Review System has been developed, and an environment has been prepared for the meticulous and impartial evaluation of the studies submitted to the journal.

Assignment of Editorial Boards, Associate Editors, and Reviewers

Only prominent experts on the journal’s core subject and well-known research community members are appointed to the Roads Editorial Boards. Editors-in-Chief, Associate Editors, and Review Editors who serve on the journal editorial boards are encouraged to publish their publications on our publicly available system.

In the Roads journals, the Associate Editors oversee the peer review and make the articles' final acceptance/rejection decision. With this application, associate editors who are experts in different fields contribute to shaping the journal's content. This approach ensures that the information society’s needs are shaped in the broader area/base. Authors may select the most suitable Associate Editors when submitting an article. This ensures the best evaluation of the submitted article and prevents unnecessary waste of time for both the author and the publisher. If the Associate Editor does not accept the offer, the journal's Editor-in-Chief can take on this task or make an offer to another Associate Editor. The authors have the right to propose, but the final decision belongs to the editor-in-chief. Associate Editors should evaluate the proposed articles, unless there is a conflict of interest. Before sending a manuscript to reviewers, it must be checked to ensure that it meets standard requirements and contains no scientific misconduct, as well as to respect the time of both reviewers and authors.

If the article editor did not invite enough reviewers, or if the invited reviewers do not respond within a specific period, the journal system warns the editor and the associated editor of the article of a new referee invitation. If the appointed reviewers did not make their evaluations on time, the editor may invite additional reviewers. The chief editor can intervene at any stage of the article evaluation process.

Quality of Independent Review Phase

In the Independent Review Phase, the referees appointed by the Review Editor can examine and analyze the article independently, ensuring complete freedom of thought and suggestion. An online standard review questionnaire is provided for reviewers to rigorously evaluate submitted articles according to objective criteria. Using this, the authors would answer criticisms and reviewers' suggestions.

Quality of the Interactive Review Phase

The Associate Editor evaluates the reviewers' comments and commences the “Interactive Review” phase. At this stage, all referees see each other's criticisms and the authors' responses to each case. They correspond with the corresponding author of the article using an online form with question-and-answer boxes. Authors must provide satisfactory answers to the reviewers’ questions. Once a consensus is reached—or an objection is raised— if the reviewers are satisfied with the revised manuscript, they approve it for publication.

On the other hand, if there is no consensus on the last version of the manuscript, the reviewer can object to or reject publishing it. If necessary, the Associate Editor may step in and be expected to lead the process to ensure a constructive revision phase, if they see it as possible. At this phase, the referee's identity is protected to ensure complete freedom of thought and to conduct an objective/unbiased discussion.

Quality of the Decision Phase

Editors-in-Chief may comment on any stage of the evaluation process of an article and may appoint themselves as Referees and/or Review Editors. 

Associate Editors may recommend to the Editor-in-Chief that a manuscript be rejected if it lacks sufficient scientific originality or if the requested revision has not been made or is inadequate. The Editor-in-Chief evaluates the entire manuscript process, considering the authors' responses and the reviewers' requests, and may reject the manuscript based on negative findings.

The decision to accept an article should be unanimous among all reviewers and the handling Associate Editor. To ensure transparency and accountability in peer review, the names of the Associate Editor and reviewers are displayed in published articles. This provides an impartial and rigorous review and encourages authors to contribute.

Measures Taken Against Conflicts of Interest

The Associate Editor, Review Editor, and referees involved in the evaluation process of the articles do not receive any financial incentive for accepting the articles, and no reward program is connected to the acceptance of the articles.

Editors-in-Chief receive an annual honorary award for articles submitted to their journals in their areas of expertise that meet a certain level of publication. This honorary award is based on the total number of articles submitted in a calendar year, not the number of articles accepted. Therefore, there is no financial incentive linked to article acceptance.

Post-Publish Quality Control

Our publishing platform provides opportunities for comments and discussion on articles even after publication, ensuring transparency and continuous scholarly engagement. Our publishing group has established a dedicated committee and a retraction protocol. If serious concerns arise—such as ethical violations, integrity issues, or scientific misconduct—the committee evaluates these concerns. If verified, the article will be retracted by our established policies.
