How we publish in the Roads Journals

Publishing with the journals ensures that your research reaches a global audience with maximum visibility and credibility. The publication process is transparent, rigorous, and guided by internationally accepted academic standards.

Choosing the right journal

  • Authors should carefully select a journal that matches their research's scope, audience, and impact.
  • Each journal provides an "Aims and Scope" section to help authors assess fit.
  • Tools such as Find a journal can also be used.

Manuscript preparation

  • Authors must follow the journal’s “Guide for Authors” regarding structure, referencing style, figures, and supplementary materials.
  • Standard sections typically include:
        - Title Page (title, author names, affiliations, ORCID)
        - Abstract and Keywords
        - Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion
        - References, Tables, and Figures
  • Manuscripts should adhere to the highest standards of scientific writing and include:
        - Ethical approval statements (for studies involving humans or animals)
        - Conflict of interest declarations
        - Funding information
        - Acknowledgements

Online submission

  • Manuscripts are submitted through the journal’s submission system.
  • Required documents typically include:
        - Main text of the manuscript file
        - Cover letter explaining novelty and contribution
        - Figures (if applicable)
        - Tables (if applicable)
        - Supplementary data (if applicable)
        - Signed copyright or license-to-publish forms (submitted after acceptance)

Editorial evaluation

  • The Editor-in-Chief or Handling Editor evaluates the manuscript for:
        - Relevance to the journal’s scope
        - Adherence to submission guidelines
        - Ethical compliance
        - Overall quality and originality
        - Technical check
  • At this stage, manuscripts may be desk-rejected if they do not meet the criteria or sent to the author for technical revision and, after that, resubmitted to the journal.

Peer review process

  • Manuscripts that pass technical checking and editorial screening are sent to the editor-in-chief; he/she will select a subject-related associate editor to determine the review editor. The review editor will send the manuscript for external peer review.
  • The review is done in two steps. The first is an independent review phase, and the second is an interactive one. In the first stage, independent review, the article reviewers conduct their evaluations independently, following standard scientific rules as stated in the Reviewer guidelines. The forms have been found in the assessment system for the manuscript review. Reviewers write their views about the manuscript on these forms. In this stage, a reviewer does not see other reviewers' comments.

  • In the second stage of manuscript evaluation, interactive review, authors respond to the reviewers' criticisms in the boxes provided, and reviewers also state their scientific opinions about the manuscript. If deemed necessary during the author-reviewer correspondence, the review editor also participates in the discussions. When required, the editor-in-chief also expresses their opinion in the review form. This stage ended with all reviewers being satisfied with the revision of the submitted manuscript. A referee can reject or accept the manuscript during this interactive evaluation phase.
  • Reviewers assess:
        - Scientific validity and rigor
        - Novelty and contribution to the field
        - Clarity of writing and data presentation
  • The process may involve one or more review rounds.

Decision and author revisions

  • After the peer review steps, the editor communicates one of the following decisions:
        - Accept as is
        - Minor revision
        - Major revision
        - Reject
  • Authors are expected to:
        - Revise the manuscript accordingly, by replying to reviewers' and editors’ comments point by point.
  • The original reviewers often re-evaluate revised manuscripts.

Acceptance and production

  • Once accepted, manuscripts move into the production stage, where they undergo:
        - Technical editing and language check
        - Typesetting and formatting
        - Proof preparation (authors must carefully check and approve)
  • A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is assigned, ensuring permanent accessibility and citation.

Online publication and indexing

  • Articles are published online first before being included in an issue.
  • The final version will be indexed in major databases.
  • Authors are encouraged to share their work via institutional repositories or personal webpages, which aligns with the journal’s self-archiving policy.

Open access publishing

  • Open access articles are published under a Creative Commons license (CC BY, CC BY-NC, etc.), ensuring maximum dissemination.
  • Article Processing Charges (APCs) will be applied for publication.

Ethical standards and compliance

  • Journals adhere to COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines.
  • Authors must disclose:
        - Conflicts of interest
        - Ethical approval for animal/human studies
        - Clinical trial registration (if applicable)
  • Plagiarism, data fabrication, or unethical conduct will result in rejection or retraction.
